While putting clip-in hair extensions in layered hair is certainly simpler, you can rock long hair even if you're starting with a short blunt cut. It all comes down to preparing your hair and placing the extensions strategically.

Condition Lightly

Clip-in hair extensions are designed to comfortably grip the hair and stay put. However, the clips will have an easier time holding onto your hair strands if you don't create a slick surface first. Wash your hair like normal. However, use a light conditioner. Apply only a small amount starting from the ends up. Let the conditioner sit for a few minutes, and then rinse it out thoroughly.

Apply Product

Mousse or setting lotion is the most appropriate styling product to prepare your hair for extensions.  Gel is too sticky. Place a small amount of your chosen product in your hand, and emulsify by rubbing it between your palms. Rake your fingers through your hair from the roots out, letting the product coat the strands.

Blow Dry Your Style

Clip-in hair extensions are going to make a natural style look longer. So, start by drying your hair roughly 85 percent with the dryer on low heat and high air. Once the hair is mostly dry, switch the dryer settings to high heat and low air. Use a round brush to create the target waves in your hair. Try to match the size of the waves in your synthetic extensions for the most natural effect.

Backcomb Sections of Hair

Your extensions will stay in longer and more securely if they have a strong grip in the hair. Create a three-inch segment of hair from ear to ear. Separate a half-inch segment from this, and use a teasing brush to backcomb the hair from about one inch to the scalp. As you go through placing extensions and sectioning out the hair, repeat this backcombing process.

Place Extensions Strategically

With a blunt haircut, making the synthetic extension look natural depends on the placement of the appropriate size weft. Isis Exchange Belly Dance Blog suggests the following guidelines for 10 extension pieces:

  • Use a three-clip extension for the nape section.
  • Section the hair from the top of each ear, and use another three-clip extension.
  • Create the next section 1 ½ inches up, from temple to temple. Center a four-clip extension, and fill in each side with a single-clip extension.
  • Section the hair from one corner of the forehead to the other. Use another four-clip extension flanked by single-clip pieces.
  • Let the hair down, but section off a segment of hair above the last single-clip on either side. Use a two-clip extension, ensuring there's enough hair to cover the clip.

As you place each extension, finger comb your hair so that it blends with the synthetic naturally. Then, enjoy the transformation of your short, blunt haircut into a mane of long hair. Speak with experts like L J Hair Systems if you have further questions.
