Wearing hair extensions is as normal today as any other fashion ensemble. As hair extensions make your morning routine faster as far as your hair styling is concerned, many beginners are timid about caring for their hair extensions. No matter if it's real human hair or synthetic, it's important to take care of it in order for it to last. It's not like the hair upon your head. It can dry out much easier and break just as well. Here are three truths beginners should know about caring for their hair extensions.

Wash Your Extensions by Finger Combing

When washing your hair, you don't want to toss it around in the sink nor use the scratching method like your real hair. Extensions get tangled just as your hair does, and you can lose so much of your quality extensions by pulling it. Instead, ensure all of your extensions are wet. Apply a generous amount of shampoo to your hair and hands. Gently finger comb your hair. This will work the shampoo through your hair without tugging and snagging any tangles. Afterward, rinse and then apply your conditioner as normal.

An Essential Oil Conditioner is Excellent for Your Hair Extensions

Some people are opposed to using conditioners in their hair. As long as it's a pure moisturizer and not watered down, it's good to moisturize your hair. One element that works well as a part of the conditioning process is to use an essential oil in your conditioning treatment.

Essential oils are natural and lightweight. Because it's so pure, it can penetrate through your hair, delivering the vitamins and nutrients your hair craves. Many essential oils have anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties. So it not only treats your hair extensions, but your scalp as well. This helps you keep your extensions in much longer, since your scalp won't be as irritated with scratching due to a dry scalp. Too much scratching lifts your extensions up much faster.

Brushing Can Be Done with Minimal Damage

One reason many hair extensions start to shed and come out from brushing is due to the actual brush being used. A wig or paddle brush is the best way to brush your extensions. The spacing between the bristles are wide enough to not tug on a lump of tangled hair at once. It's also best to always add a bit of conditioner to your hair, so it is not 100% dry when combing and brushing. This additional moisture prevents additional tangles.
