One of the most common side effects of teeth whitening procedures is an increase in tooth sensitivity. This side effect is due to the way teeth whitening gels -- in particular the bleaching agents that they contain -- interact with tooth enamel.

Although teeth whitening should not cause permanent side effects, some patients report increased sensitivity in their teeth in the weeks that immediately follow the procedure.

If your teeth are prone to sensitivity, you can still undergo the procedure by taking some precautions. The following are six things you can do after the procedure that will minimize this side effect:

Get a toothbrush with soft bristles

The harder the bristles are on your toothbrush, the more likely you are to experience sensitivity while brushing. A soft bristle brush will protect you from both pain and damage to your enamel in the days after teeth whitening.

Brush gently

Many dental patients inflict a lot of damage on their teeth by over-brushing.  It is tempting to brush for extra long periods of time out of fear of developing cavities. Dental patients who are concerned about tooth stains are especially susceptible to over-brushing.

However, brushing for excessively long periods of time could wear away your enamel and cause your gums to bleed. Most dentists recommend two minutes as the ideal length of time for a thorough -- but not excessive -- brushing.

Avoid eating acidic foods

Acidic foods are known for being hard on the enamel. If they are left on the teeth and not immediately brushed away, they can cause enamel to break down. It's therefore particular important to avoid them right after your enamel has been exposed to whitening gel.

Avoid eating extremely hot or cold foods

Eating very hot or cold foods can cause sharp pain and discomfort in the teeth. Keep yourself comfortable by allowing hot foods to cool and avoiding frozen foods like ice cream.

Use dental products containing fluoride

Fluoride fortifies the teeth by preventing decay and building up enamel. You should use a toothpaste containing fluoride all of the time, but it's especially important after whitening. You should also invest in a mouthwash that is formulated with fluoride.

Get a toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth

There are a variety of different toothpastes on the market formulated for individuals with sensitive teeth. These toothpastes generally work by including ingredients like strontium chloride or potassium nitrate that are capable of blocking pain signals coming from tooth nerves.
