While some men embrace their balding heads, most like to camouflage them — or at least draw attention away from the bald or thin areas to some degree. This all starts with getting the right haircut. Luckily, you have options! Here are four cuts for men that draw attention away from balding.

Crew Cut

If you are open to having short hair, the crew cut is a good choice. It works really well for men whose hairlines are beginning to recede at the temples. The hair is cut short, but it's left a bit longer on the top than on the sides. The change in length from the top to the sides tends to make the lack of hair at the hairline less obvious.

Ivy League

This hairstyle is sometimes known as a "front comb-over." Basically, the sides are cut short, but the top is left significantly longer. And the hair is longer at the front of the head, near the forehead, than it is towards the back of the head. This allows the front, longer hair to be combed back and to the side, masking any thinning hair or baldness towards the crown of the head. This is a very professional, yet sleek-looking style.

Quiff

You've probably seen a pompadour — the style that leaves the hair really long towards the front of the head so it can be combed over and back. The quiff is very similar, except there is a distinct part down one side of the hairline. This calls attention away from a receding hairline. This cut can be quite youthful. It works best with very straight and thick hair.

Faux Hawk

If you're looking for an edgier style, then you can't go wrong with a faux hawk. The sides of the head are cut short, and there's a strip of hair left longer down the center of the head. The long hair is tapered into the shorter sides. You can comb the hair back or stand it up. Either way, it will take attention away from a receding hairline, and it can also camouflage some balding further back.

If your hair loss is beginning to make you feel self-conscious, talk to your hairstylist about these haircuts. They can look over your balding pattern and head shape and recommend the best one for you. It may take you a few tries to get the styling right, but when you're starting with a good cut, you'll get great results.
